The large spectacular colors of this herbaceous perennial plant are bright red, red-violet or white and appear against the background of its shiny green leaves in early summer. The boredom family has a long history of phytotherapy - it is even named after Peon, the healer of the Greek gods, and is also grown for its decorative qualities. The medical properties of white peony are hidden in its bulging roots.
The white peony contains monoterpenic glycosides (peonyflorin). Peonyflorin is considered to be its important active ingredient and many of the studies are focused on this substance. The composition of the herb also includes benzoic acid and asparagine.
The plant is among the most important female healing herbs in Chinese folk medicine. It is prescribed for various menstrual complaints, including premenstrual syndrome, heavy menstruation, bleeding between two cycles and lack of menstruation. Phytotherapeutists also recommend it for polycystic ovary syndrome, myoma and some cases of female infertility, often in combination with naked sweets or other herbs.
