Lovage is a perennial plant, the leaves, fruits and rhizome are used. It contains essential oil, which in the rhizome is up to 1 percent. There are also resins, lecithin, sugars, enzymes, tanning substances, organic acids, etc.

An essential oil is obtained from the rhizome and fruit, which is also used as a spice.

Lovage causes the release of secretions, mainly from the gastrointestinal tract and lungs, tones the body, stimulates the excretory system, has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, has a pronounced antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles.

Its rhizome and fruits are good antiseptics, combined with parsley, bay leaf, black and red pepper, etc. Stored well, its dried leaves retain their tasty and aromatic properties for a long time. Their dosage is the same as for basil: one medium-sized rhizome is added to a dish for 4.

For medicinal purposes, it is the rhizome of Lovage that is used: lack of appetite, colic in the stomach and intestines. It is used as an expectorant, carminative, choleretic, menstrual regulating agent. It helps heart activity and is a good remedy for neuralgia.

It is also a strong natural diuretic. It is used against profuse sweating and for some skin diseases.

The juice of Lovage is used as an anthelmintic.

With prolonged use - e.g. more than a month, causes nausea, vomiting and dizziness.

It is taken internally: 1 teaspoon rhizomes are poured with 500 ml boiling water, soak for 3-4 hours, strain, divide into 3 equal parts. The decoction is drunk in the morning, noon and evening, before meals.

According to some authors, Lovage caused blood flow in the pelvis, and therefore it is not suitable for pregnant women, there is a risk of abortion!
