Nowadays, more and more people are looking for healthy alternatives to classic coffee. One such alternative is Retro Coffee – a beverage that combines the taste of the past with health benefits. We offer it in two variations: Retro Coffee (a blend of chickpeas and rye) and Retro Coffee with Chicory (with added chicory for a more pronounced aroma and additional health benefits).

The History of Retro Coffee

Beverages made from grains and legumes have a long history. They were popular in Europe and the Balkans as early as the 19th century, especially during wars and economic crises when coffee was expensive and inaccessible. In Bulgaria, homemade coffee substitutes, such as roasted grains and chickpeas, were part of the traditional cuisine. Besides offering a pleasant taste and aroma, these drinks were both affordable and beneficial for the body.

The Health Benefits of the Ingredients

Chickpeas – rich in protein, fiber, and minerals such as iron, magnesium, and phosphorus. They aid digestion and help stabilize blood sugar levels.

Rye – contains antioxidants and essential B vitamins that support metabolism and energy balance in the body.

Chicory – a natural source of inulin, a prebiotic that promotes good digestion and balances gut flora. It also has a slightly bitter taste, resembling coffee, but without caffeine.

A Drink Without Additives or Caffeine

Retro Coffee is a 100% natural product. It contains no artificial additives, preservatives, or caffeine, making it an excellent choice for people who want to reduce their caffeine intake or are looking for a lighter and healthier alternative to regular coffee.

How to Prepare Retro Coffee?

Since this drink is not instant and does not fully dissolve in water, its preparation requires a little more time, but it is well worth it. Here are some methods:

Classic Method: Steep 1-2 teaspoons of the blend in 250 ml of hot water for 5-7 minutes, then strain.

In a Turkish Coffee Pot (Cezve): Simmer 1-2 teaspoons of the blend in 250 ml of water over low heat for about 5 minutes. Strain before drinking.

French Press: Pour hot water over 1-2 teaspoons of the blend, let it sit for 5-7 minutes, and then press the plunger.

Moka Pot: Suitable for those who seek a more intense flavor. Use the blend as you would ground coffee.
