Smoketree is a shrub up to 2 m tall or a small tree up to 4 m. The leaves are alternate, 3-8 cm long, ovate with long petioles. The flowers are greenish, collected in a panicle. The fruit is dry, one-seeded. Blooms May-June.
It grows in thickets and oak forests, in dry and stony places almost all over the country up to 800 m above sea level.
The leaves are used.
Therapeutic action:
Astringent, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and hemostatic effect, which is due to the tannins and essential oil.
Application:
Smoketree has a beneficial effect on:
- purulent skin rashes, wounds, boils, sweating of the feet;
- hair loss, bleeding, swollen and purulent gums;
- hemorrhoids, joint swelling;
- diarrhea, dysentery;
- Colitis;
- bleeding gums.
In Bulgarian folk medicine, smoketree is used for hemoptysis, inflammation of the intestines and stomach, kidney diseases, diarrhea, heartburn, hemorrhoids.
External application:
It is used for baths for wounds, eczema, hemorrhoids, for sweating feet, for compresses for purulent wounds and acne. It can be used for gargles for gum problems and sore throats.
Internal application:
1 tbsp of the leaves of the herb are put in 500 ml of water. Boil for 10 minutes. Drink 1 cup of coffee before meals, 4 times a day.
