Licorice (Glyzyrchiza glabra) is an ancient medicinal and sweetener. It is mentioned in the works of Theophrastus /4th-3rd century BC/, who calls it a Scythian root.
Avicenna treated the same diseases with the herb, which are also mentioned in Bulgarian medicines from the 14th to the 17th century. It belongs to the Legume family and its roots are used.
The sweet taste of its roots is due to the glycoside glycyrrhizin, which is 50 times sweeter than sugar. It is a potassium-calcium salt of glycyrrhizic acid. Its roots also contain saponins, flavonoids, polysaccharides, polyphenols, vitamin C, etc.
Flavonoids have a pronounced papaverine-like antispasmodic effect, while at the same time they are diuretic and anti-inflammatory. They are also beneficial for stomach and duodenal ulcers. According to some authors, glycyrrhizin disrupts the electrolyte action in the body and can cause edema.
The roots also have an adrenocorticosteroid effect. Therefore, it is recommended that licorice is not used in large doses: the usual dose is 1 teaspoon of crushed roots, to be taken for no more than 20 days.
In the form of water extracts or powdered roots, the herb is used to sweeten drinks - beer, lemonade, etc., to make candies, chewing gum, etc.
In medicine, it is used as an expectorant, laxative, anti-ulcer agent, but only under the supervision of a specialist.
Licorice also produces anti-ulcer preparations.
