Even the Hindus knew the smelly basil and valued it highly. The Romans did not like it very much because they used it to treat melancholy and depression. Other peoples thought that whoever used basil became beautiful and attractive.

In Bulgaria, it was widely used as a medicinal herb in the 17th and 18th century medicine books, and also in the 19th century.

Essential oil was also extracted, which is a yellowish liquid with the same aroma and taste. Basil essential oil also contains cineole, linalool, camphor and others, extracted from the above-ground part of the plant. It improves the work of the stomach, increases appetite, has antispasmodic and antiseptic effects.

In the past, basil essential oil was used extensively in baptisms and other Christian rites.

Basil is a very suitable spice for dietary dishes. The leaves and its aerial part are used fresh - a few leaves, and in dried form - an equal tablespoon. It can be stored longer if soaked in oil or frozen. In some cases, basil replaces cardamom as a spice.

In phytotherapy, basil is a diuretic, it also acts against spastic colitis, it is suitable for gargling the gums and also for runny nose. It is taken internally: pour 2 teaspoons of dried and powdered basil with 600 ml of boiling water. Soak for 2-4 hours, strain and divide into 3 doses: morning, noon and evening in equal parts. It is drunk before meals.

Prepared according to the above recipe, it can be drunk by nursing mothers, half of this amount being sufficient. It is taken on an empty stomach 3 times a day.

In difficult-to-heal wounds, the green mass and basil essential oil are applied externally in the form of compresses and ointments.

In addition to stinking basil, eugenol basil is also grown, from which an essential oil with over 70 percent eugenol is extracted. This basil is used for an essential oil that serves as a substitute for clove essential oil.
