When does menopause begin?

We usually associate it with the cessation of menstruation, but it actually starts much earlier.

Menopause is the condition in which a woman does not have menstruation for 12 consecutive months. But before that, changes occur in her body that prepare it for this stage. We are talking about a situation in which the uterus, ovaries, etc. have not been removed before. This period of preparation for stopping menstruation is called perimenopause and usually lasts 8-10 years. Perimenopause usually starts around the age of 45, but it is different for every woman. Unfortunately, there are cases where women in their mid-30s begin to experience similar symptoms.

First signs

Hormonal changes begin in this period: the levels of estrogens and progesterone decrease, and they are usually in balance. It is this decline in hormones that begins to cause problems for a woman. The first thing that changes is the menstrual cycle: instead of coming every 28 days, it comes every 22, 24 days or less often. The amount of menstrual blood changes, in some women the cycle becomes downright scarce. In others, because of progesterone levels, menstruation being too heavy, spotting blood between cycles. In addition to problems with menstruation, the woman begins to have problems with mood, changes in sexual desire, sleep problems in the direction of insomnia, hot flashes and night sweats.

It is important to know that some of the complaints - hot flashes, night sweats, sleep problems can also be due to problems with the thyroid gland, which are triggered precisely in this period of a woman's life.

During menopause, the vagina begins to become drier, as well as more frequent gynecological and urinary infections - cystitis, pyelonephritis, etc.

There are also problems with memory and concentration. A headache may also occur around menstruation, i.e. migraine.

As a result of all this, there is also a reduced possibility of getting pregnant.

First steps

A woman in this period of perimenopause and menopause leads a very active life: there are also teenage children, sick, aging or problematic parents, responsible work. To top it off, problems with her partner, husband or other people who are important to her also appear. In this period, in addition to dealing with all these problems, a woman must be able to handle herself.

During this period, as a result of hormonal problems, weight changes are also observed, in the direction of weight gain, as a result of slowing down the metabolism. Therefore, in this period, a woman should start doing more things for her health. For example, if she has been addicted to high-intensity workouts, to reduce them because they increase cortisol. For women over 40, a low-intensity sport is suitable, which allows the weight to be controlled much more easily. If until then the woman allowed herself poor nutrition, drastic diets, now in this period proper nutrition is key.

You should also drink enough water: at least 1.5 liters daily. The woman should give up carbonated drinks and limit sugar.

Vegetarianism and veganism are basically a carbohydrate diet and plant protein is not digested well enough. The body needs a variety of nutrition, except in cases where a woman has some kind of food intolerance.

Homeopathy, Schussler therapy and nutritional supplements are added to health care.

This is the time when a woman should quit smoking, as smokers have an earlier menopause.
