Barley is one of the first crops sown by mankind. This happened in the region of the Fertile Crescent - an area with a relative abundance of water - and the areas around the Nile River in northeastern Africa.
The earliest archaeological evidence of human use of wild barley comes from the Epipaleolithic site of Ohalo, located at the southern end of the Sea of Galilee. The remains have been dated to around 8500 BC.
