Peppermint is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants of the Ursaceae family. It is distributed mainly in the northern temperate zone. In Bulgaria, there are about 9 species with numerous variations, from which Mentha Piperita - known as peppermint - is grown.

The stem is branched, about 0.70 m high, four-edged, the leaves are simple, oblong, sharply toothed. The flowers are reddish-violet, collected in racemes; the seeds are small. All aerial parts of the plant contain an essential oil with the main component menthol (45-65%). From the aerial mass obtained from 1 decare, harvested in full bloom during sunny weather, about 3-5 kg of essential oil is obtained by steam distillation.

Action:

Menthol excites the respiratory and vasomotor centers in the medulla oblongata. The herb has a soothing, analgesic, antiseptic, antispasmodic effect. Eases breathing, increases the secretion of bile juice, removes intestinal gases, expands coronary vessels.

Health Benefits:

It is considered a feminine herb because it reduces pain and discomfort during the monthly cycle. Reduces muscle and vascular spasms, has an antihypertensive effect (reduces pressure in hypertension), helps with stomach colic.

The menthol contained in the plant reduces blood pressure. Therefore, hypotensives (people with low blood pressure) should carefully take mint tea and other infusions.

Peppermint is a soothing herb that has been used for thousands of years for upset stomachs and indigestion, and also as a means of preventing morning sickness during pregnancy.

Peppermint increases the secretion of bile and promotes bile flow, which helps to speed up and facilitate the digestion of food.

Peppermint works well for nervous excitement, headaches and migraines. It is often used to gargle with inflammation of the gums, etc.
