Product information

Poppy is an annual herb that originates from Asia Minor. There are over 100 types of poppies. Papaver somniferum, also known as sleeping poppy, is not found growing wild and should not be confused with the field poppy, which is widespread as a weed in crops and grassy areas throughout Bulgaria.

Poppy seeds are obtained from the fully ripe fruit and do not contain alkaloids. The seeds are small with a pleasant thick taste and aroma of nuts.

Health Benefits:

The poppy seed is used as an oil-bearing plant, containing up to 55% oil in the seeds. In poppy seeds, we find low levels of B vitamins and higher levels of sodium and potassium.

Cold-pressed poppy seed oil is characterized by a relatively low content (about 11%) of saturated fatty acids and over 85% of unsaturated fatty acids. The main fatty acid (over 65%) in poppy seed oil is linoleic acid. It is also rich in other essential fatty acids, including oleic, as well as vitamins E and B complex. Therefore, it has a high nutritional value, but it is also a valuable ingredient with cosmetic and therapeutic applications. The main saturated fatty acids include stearic acid, palmitic acid, and arachidic acid.

One of the most notable health benefits of poppy seed oil is its analgesic properties, which have also been proven in clinical studies with experimental animals (Hosseinzadeh, 2000). The oil is rich in minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Poppy oil has an anti-inflammatory effect, supports heart health, supports brain function, and regulates stomach function.

Poppy seed has an antitussive effect. It is used to soothe a painful cough, but also for diarrhea, dysentery, and bedwetting.
