Coconut milk can be obtained in two ways - either from unripe coconuts or from fully developed coconut flesh. The first method is mainly used in South America, while the second is typical for Southeast Asia, which is where most coconut milk products found in Bulgarian stores originate.
The production process is simple and natural. The coconut flesh is pressed mechanically, then pressed again two or three more times after being heated in warm water. This produces both thicker and thinner aromatic liquids, which are usually blended together and diluted with water until a milk-like consistency is achieved.
The taste is very similar to dairy milk, but naturally sweeter and enriched with the characteristic aroma of coconut.
Health Benefits:
Supports the Immune System
Coconut milk contains lauric acid, capric acid, and antimicrobial lipids, known for their antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
The body converts lauric acid into monolaurin, a compound that stimulates the immune system and helps fight viruses and bacteria responsible for conditions such as herpes and influenza.
Supports Heart Health
The medium-chain saturated fatty acids found in coconut milk help destroy bacteria that contribute to plaque formation in the arteries and support the overall health of the cardiovascular system.
Helps Maintain Healthy Blood Pressure
Regular consumption of coconut milk may help support healthy blood pressure levels. It can significantly reduce systolic pressure and, thanks to its electrolyte content, helps maintain proper gland function and electrolyte balance in the body. One of the main causes of high blood pressure is salt imbalance, and the minerals found in coconut products help regulate this balance.
Coconut Milk for Babies and Children
According to specialists, coconut milk can serve as a nutritious alternative to infant formula, as it contains lauric acid, also found in breast milk. Because it is naturally sterile and has a composition similar to human blood plasma, it has historically been used as a substitute in extreme situations.
