The fruit is a multi-seeded, spherical, bluish-black, with a pleasant sour-sweet and slightly astringent taste. It blooms from May to July.
Content of vitamins and minerals:
Bilberry is an excellent source of vitamin C. This vitamin is water soluble and acts as an antioxidant - helping cells repair the damage caused by free radicals.
Bilberry contains phenolic compounds, including flavonols, tannins, elagotanins, phenolic acids and especially anthocyanins. Bilberries have a higher anthocyanin content than fruits such as strawberry, cranberry, elderberry, raspberry and sour cherry.
Anthocyanins reduce inflammation and improve the condition of collagen-containing tissues such as cartilage and tendons.
According to experts, the usual daily intake of anthocyanin is approximately 200 mg. 100 g of bilberry fruits provide between 300 mg and 700 mg anthocyanins depending on the variety of fruit, growing conditions and degree of ripeness.
Bilberry contains vitamins A, E, C, K, calcium, iron, copper, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, flavonoids and tannins. In this way, in addition to strengthening the body's overall immune system, it regulates digestion, blood sugar and blood pressure, relieves menstrual pain, prevents the formation of cysts, treats inflammation and reduces bleeding.
The healing properties of the bilberry fruit have been known since antiquity. Consumption of dried fruits is useful for:
- improvement of the general condition in neurodegenerative diseases;
- improving memory, coordination and balance of processes in the nervous system;
- improving vision and eye health;
- destruction of excess fat deposits and suppression of new fat cells;
- strengthening the bones and reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
