Spirulina is a phytoplankton, a blue-green microalgae. It is found in both fresh lake waters and salty sea waters.
Its name derives from its shape – it forms spiral coils, about 1 mm long. Spirulina uses the energy of light to multiply and release oxygen.
Spirulina is rich in many proteins - 65%. These proteins contain a complete complex of essential amino acids and 10 of the non-essential amino acids. In addition, it is completely digested in the gastrointestinal tract. This makes it a low-calorie product (3 g equals 3.6 cal.)
Spirulina contains only 5% fat in the form of the very useful essential polyunsaturated fatty acids - linoleic and gammalinolenic (also called vitamins of the F group), and the beta-carotene contained in it is 10 times more than in carrots.
The iron content in spirulina is several times more than any other product and is in a form that is most easily absorbed by the body.
It also contains a number of enzymes, among which is superoxide dismutase - the destroyer of free radicals.
Spirulina is a source of dietary fiber that removes toxic substances, excess fat and metabolic waste from the intestines. It regulates the level of sugar and cholesterol in the blood.
