Product information

Silverweed
Potentilla anserina L.
Other names:
Goose cinquefoil, Silverweed cinquefoil

History and Origin:

Silverweed (Potentilla anserina L.) is a perennial plant from the Rosaceae family that has been known and used in Europe for centuries. With its distinctive silvery-green leaves and bright yellow flowers, the plant is easily recognisable in the wild, while various species of the Potentilla genus have long held an important place in traditional European herbal practices.

Potentilla anserina is best known as silverweed or goose cinquefoil, with its common names reflecting the plant's characteristic appearance and traditional habitats. The plant has a long history of use in the folk medicine of various European cultures, where its aerial parts have traditionally been prepared mainly as infusions and decoctions.

Plant Description:

Silverweed is a perennial herbaceous plant with upright or ascending, branched and hairy stems, usually reaching 15-30 cm in height. The plant develops a rhizome, while its leaves are characterised by their pinnate structure and distinctive silvery-white colouring on the underside.

The flowers are solitary, borne on long stalks, and have a vivid yellow colour. Flowering silverweed stands out easily among surrounding vegetation, particularly in damp meadows and areas near water. Its creeping stems can root when they come into contact with the soil, helping the plant spread naturally.

Different parts of Potentilla anserina have been used in traditional herbal practices. Depending on the tradition and intended use, the aerial parts, leaves, flowers or rhizome may be utilised. The product offered by Zdravnitza consists of dried silverweed stems.

Distribution in Bulgaria:

Silverweed is a plant found in various parts of Bulgaria. It prefers moist and grassy habitats, meadows, pastures, areas near water bodies and other locations with sufficient soil moisture. The presence of Potentilla anserina L. has been documented in natural habitats in Bulgaria, including moist grassland communities.

In Europe, the species is widely distributed and occurs across much of the temperate zone. Potentilla anserina is characteristic of various grassy habitats, moist meadows and areas along rivers and other watercourses, and can be found in numerous European countries. The species is also distributed beyond Europe, occurring in parts of Asia and other regions of the temperate Northern Hemisphere.

Silverweed in Bulgarian Folk Medicine:

Goose cinquefoil has a place in traditional Bulgarian folk medicine. In traditional herbal practices, the herb has been used mainly for various digestive and intestinal complaints, including stomach discomfort, pain and cramps. Historical accounts of the use of Potentilla anserina in Bulgarian folk medicine also mention its traditional use for diarrhoea and certain menstrual disorders.

Traditionally, the herb has been prepared as decoctions and infusions for internal use. Externally, different Potentilla species have also traditionally been used as decoctions for oral rinsing and for skin care. These applications are part of the plant's historical folk use and should not be regarded as a substitute for medical treatment.

The use of Potentilla anserina is not limited to Bulgaria. In traditional European herbal medicine, the plant has been used for centuries for digestive complaints, cramps and inflammatory conditions. Modern review publications confirm the species' historical use in European folk medicine and also highlight its content of tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids and other naturally occurring plant compounds.

Composition and Characteristic Plant Compounds:

Silverweed contains naturally occurring plant compounds, including tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpenes and other substances. Tannins are among the characteristic constituents of the plant and are one of the reasons silverweed has traditionally been used in herbal practices associated with digestive comfort.

Research into Potentilla anserina continues to investigate various biological properties of the plant. However, scientific reviews emphasise the need for further research, particularly when considering how experimental findings may translate into specific health applications in humans.
