History and Origin:

Black Locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is a deciduous tree from the Fabaceae family, known for its fragrant white flowers and distinctive hanging flower clusters. Despite its common name "White Acacia", the plant botanically belongs to the Robinia genus and is native to North America. It was introduced to Europe in the early 17th century and gradually became widely established as an ornamental, melliferous and useful tree.

Thanks to its fragrant flowers, Black Locust has a special place in European traditions associated with beekeeping and herbal practices. The flowers have traditionally been used to prepare infusions, while acacia honey is one of the well-known products obtained from the nectar of the plant.

Plant Description:

Black Locust is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach considerable heights. The trunk is covered with grey-brown, rough and deeply fissured bark. Young branches often have characteristic pairs of sharp thorns formed from modified stipules.

The leaves are compound and pinnate, consisting of numerous oval leaflets with smooth margins. The flowers are white, highly fragrant and arranged in hanging racemes. Flowering usually takes place in May and June, when the tree becomes covered with numerous clusters of fragrant flowers. The fruit is a flat brown pod containing several dark brown seeds.

The flowers are traditionally the main part of the plant used in herbal practices. They are collected during flowering and carefully dried, usually in the shade or under suitable drying conditions. The product offered by Zdravnitza consists of dried Black Locust flowers.

Distribution in Bulgaria:

Black Locust is widely distributed throughout Bulgaria and is cultivated as an ornamental, melliferous and soil-stabilising plant. It can be found along roads, in parks and gardens, near settlements, on slopes and in other suitable habitats. The species is resilient and can grow well even on relatively dry and nutrient-poor soils.

The plant is not native to Europe - its natural range is in eastern and central North America. After being introduced to Europe in the 17th century, it became widely established across the continent and is now found in many European countries, including Bulgaria. In some regions, Black Locust can spread aggressively through root suckers and may become invasive.

Black Locust in Bulgarian Folk Medicine:

The flowers of Black Locust have a long history of use in Bulgarian folk medicine. Traditionally, infusions and water-based preparations have been made from the flowers and used mainly for various respiratory complaints. In folk practice, the flowers have been regarded as having soothing and expectorant properties.

Traditional use of the flowers also includes applications associated with digestive complaints and certain women's health concerns. Various sources on Bulgarian folk medicine mention the flowers and other parts of the plant in connection with coughs, digestive discomfort and other traditional applications.

Composition and Characteristic Plant Compounds:

Black Locust - Dried Flowers:

Use: as an aid with an astringent effect for catarrhal conditions of the respiratory tract, vaginal discharge and others.

Preparation: Pour 200 ml of boiling water over 1 teaspoon of the finely cut herbal material. Allow to cool, then strain and drink in three portions throughout the day.

Packing: 30 g
