Danewort is a perennial plant. Its leaves are serrated and the flowers are white, with a pleasant odor. Its fruits are small, black and shiny, with three elongated seeds inside. The plant can be found in mountainous areas and in river valleys of Bulgaria, where the sun's rays do not shine directly.
The flowers are collected when more than 2/3 of them have bloomed, the fruits are collected in autumn when they are black. Green fruits should not be used for consumption. The parts used by this plant are the flowers, fruits and bark of the stem.
It is distributed throughout Bulgaria up to 1800 m above sea level. In herbal medicine, the fruit (Fructus Ebuli) and the root (Radix Ebuli) are used, and less often the flowers (Flores Ebuli).
The flowers contain a small amount of essential oil, cynogenic glycoside and sugars; fruits - anthocyanin dyes, sugars, valeric, malic and tartaric acid, tannins, resins, pectin, vitamin C and others. Green fruits and seeds contain a cyanogenic glycoside, which is why they are poisonous, but the juice of ripe fruits is not poisonous. The roots contain tannins and tannins.
