The papaya is a tropical tree thriving in the hot, damp regions of Central and South America, South Africa and Southeast Asia.

The papaya reaches a height of between 5 and 10 m. Its fruit is round or elongated, with a yellow-green bark and a pink-orange interior, tastefully resembling a mixture of melon and peach. Inside they contain a large number of black seeds, which are used dried and crushed as a spice.

The orange-pink color of the papaya is due to the presence of carotenoids, especially beta-carotene and lycopene. These are types of antioxidants that are effective in fighting cancer. Lycopene may reduce the risk of prostate cancer by causing death of cancer cells, increasing anti-metastatic action and strengthening protective enzymes.
