Product information

- Specially selected blend of 6 aromatic spices
- With Ceylon cinnamon, cloves, cardamom and star anise
- Finely chopped spices for faster and more even flavouring
- Ideal for preparing aromatic mulled wine at home

"DaroVita" Mulled Wine Spice Mix is a specially selected blend of six aromatic spices, created for preparing warm, rich and beautifully fragrant mulled wine. The blend combines Ceylon cinnamon, cloves, long pepper, mace, cardamom and star anise - spices with different aromatic profiles that complement each other and create the characteristic warm and spicy flavour of this winter drink.

The spices in the blend are finely chopped, but not ground into a powder. This allows their aromas to be gradually released into the wine as it is heated, while the blend can easily be removed by straining before serving.

One 50 g pack can be used to prepare up to 10 bottles of mulled wine. This makes it easy to enjoy your favourite winter drink at home, whether for a cosy evening or when sharing with friends and family.

History and origin of mulled wine:

The idea of warming and flavouring wine dates back to ancient times. Even in the ancient world, wine was combined with spices, herbs and sweeteners. One of the best-known historical examples is Conditum Paradoxum - a spiced wine described in Roman culinary tradition. Later, various recipes for spiced wines emerged across Europe, gradually becoming part of the continent's winter culinary culture.

During the Middle Ages, Hippocras became particularly popular - an aromatic wine made with expensive spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger and other aromatic ingredients. At that time, spiced wine was consumed both for pleasure and in the context of traditional beliefs about food and wellbeing.

Over time, different European regions developed their own versions of warm spiced wine. In this way, the drink evolved from a historical recipe into one of Europe's most recognisable winter beverages.

Mulled wine around the world:

Germany and Austria - Glühwein:
In German-speaking countries, mulled wine is an integral part of winter and Christmas traditions. Glühwein is served at Christmas markets and winter events, while the aroma of cinnamon and other spices has become one of the characteristic scents of the German Advent season. Red wine is usually used, with spices and, in some recipes, citrus fruits, sugar or other aromatic ingredients added.

Sweden and Scandinavia - Glögg:
In Sweden, mulled wine is known as glögg and is a traditional part of the Christmas season. It is usually served warm, often with almonds and raisins. In Denmark it is known as gløgg, while in Finland it is called glögi. The Swedish tradition associates the drink with cosy winter gatherings and Christmas celebrations.

France - Vin chaud:
French vin chaud is particularly popular during winter and in mountainous regions. Recipes vary from region to region, but often include red wine, cinnamon, cloves, citrus peel and other aromatic spices.

Italy - Vin brulé:
In northern Italy, mulled wine is known as vin brulé. It is particularly characteristic of cold mountainous regions and winter celebrations, where it is served hot and aromatic.

Central and Eastern Europe:
Different versions of mulled or spiced wine are also found in Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and other European countries. Depending on local traditions, honey, sugar, citrus fruits, apples or different combinations of spices may be added.

This regional diversity is one of the most interesting features of mulled wine - the basic idea remains the same, but every country and even every family may have its own recipe.

What makes "DaroVita" Mulled Wine Spice Mix special?

  • Ceylon cinnamon - a gentler and more delicate aroma compared with the sharper profile of cassia cinnamon;
  • Cloves - a rich, warm and slightly spicy aroma characteristic of many classic mulled wine recipes;
  • Long pepper - adds deeper spiciness and a gently warming flavour note;
  • Mace - the aromatic aril surrounding the nutmeg seed, providing a warm, slightly sweet and subtly spicy character;
  • Cardamom - a fresh, slightly citrusy and complex aroma that balances the warmer spices;
  • Star anise - a distinctive sweet anise-like aroma that adds a finishing touch and unique character to the drink.

The spices and their traditionally valued properties:

Ceylon cinnamon
Cinnamon is one of the world's oldest and most valued aromatic spices. It contains aromatic compounds such as cinnamaldehyde and various polyphenols, which have been the subject of numerous scientific studies. Cinnamon has traditionally been valued for its warming aroma, pleasant flavour and important role in culinary traditions.

Cloves
Cloves are particularly rich in the aromatic compound eugenol, as well as other phenolic compounds. Scientific literature has examined cloves for their notable antioxidant potential. In culinary use, cloves are valued for their intense aroma and their ability to add depth to winter drinks and desserts.

Long pepper
Long pepper is an ancient spice from South Asia, traditionally used in Indian and other Asian culinary and traditional practices. It contains piperine and other plant compounds and has a more complex, warm and slightly sweet spiciness compared with ordinary black pepper.

Mace
Mace is the dried aromatic aril surrounding the nutmeg seed. It has a warm, sweet-spicy and slightly floral aroma. Like nutmeg, it has a long history of culinary use and contains a variety of aromatic compounds characteristic of the plant.

Cardamom
Cardamom is a prized spice from South Asia, known for its fresh, slightly citrusy and eucalyptus-like aroma. It has a long history of traditional use and is particularly popular in beverages, desserts and savoury dishes. Scientific research has investigated various compounds in cardamom and their potential antioxidant and other biological activities.

Star anise
Star anise is one of the most recognisable spices in the blend thanks to its distinctive sweet, anise-like aroma. Its fruits contain essential oil and various natural compounds, including shikimic acid. The spice has a long history of use in Asian cuisine and traditional practices.

Ingredients:

Blend of finely chopped spices: Ceylon cinnamon, cloves, long pepper, mace, cardamom, star anise.

The natural character of the blend: The individual spices may vary in size and shape, as they are natural plant ingredients that have not been ground into a powder. This gives the blend an authentic appearance and allows the different spices to be easily recognised.

Directions for use:

Add 5 g to 700 ml of wine and heat.

How to prepare mulled wine with "DaroVita" Spice Mix?

1. Choose your wine.
For classic mulled wine, use 700 ml of dry or semi-dry red wine. There is no need to choose an expensive wine - the aromatic spices give the drink its character and create its own distinctive flavour profile.

2. Add the spice mix.
Pour 5 g of "DaroVita" Mulled Wine Spice Mix into a suitable saucepan and add 700 ml of red wine.

3. Heat gently.
Heat over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally. The drink should become thoroughly warm, but do not allow it to boil. This helps preserve the pleasant aromas of the wine and spices.

4. Allow the spices to infuse.
Once the wine is warm, leave it for approximately 10-15 minutes over very low heat or with the heat turned off, allowing the aromas to gradually infuse into the drink.

5. Sweeten to taste.
If you prefer sweeter mulled wine, you can add sugar, honey or another sweetener. For an additional fruity aroma, add slices of orange, apple or a little orange peel.

6. Strain and serve.
As the spices in "DaroVita" Spice Mix are finely chopped but not ground into a powder, you can easily strain the finished mulled wine before serving. Serve warm in suitable glasses or heat-resistant glassware.

For a richer flavour:
If you prefer a more intense, spicy and aromatic profile, you can increase the amount of the blend according to your personal taste. A larger amount of spices will give the finished drink a stronger aroma and more pronounced spiciness.

Ideas for customising your mulled wine:

  • Classic: red wine + "DaroVita" Spice Mix + a little sugar;
  • Citrus: add orange peel or orange slices;
  • Fruity: add apple, pear or dried fruit;
  • Honey-sweetened: sweeten with honey after heating;
  • Extra spicy: increase the amount of the blend according to taste;
  • Festive: add orange, apple and a few dried fruits for a richer aroma.

Strong and reliable packaging: "DaroVita" Mulled Wine Spice Mix is protected in a thick and durable heat-sealed pouch. The thicker material provides excellent mechanical protection, helps prevent the pouch from tearing easily and contributes to better storage and preservation of the quality of the raw ingredients.
