Star anise is the fruit of an evergreen tree of the Magnolia family /Illicium verum/, which has beautiful pale yellow flowers and star-shaped fruits. It originates from the mountainous provinces of southern China, but is also grown in Vietnam, Laos, Jamaica, India, the Philippines.
The star-shaped fruits are picked before they are fully ripe. In each of the eight tips of the fruit there is a seed that gives the aroma. It has been used as a spice and medicine since ancient times.
Along with fennel, cassia, cloves, Szechuan pepper, star anise is part of a five-spice combination that the Chinese grind into powder and use as a spice.

Star anise has an expectorant effect, so anise essential oil is also often used. It has an antispasmodic effect. Star anise seeds enhance lactation in women in labor, and tea is indispensable for baby colic.
